I'm pretty new to MailChimp but here's the way I've got it set up in there for now:

• We have one large subscriber list for everyone called Debug Politics Community
• I've Managed subscribers into Groups. I called the Group involvement_type. The categories for this are currently: hackathon_participant, sf1_visitor, sf2_visitor, sf1_rsvp, sf2_rsvp, and I added a new one called signup_from_website. People can exist in multiple groups.

I think the goal here is to have the following flow or something similar:

1. Person goes to our website and submits their email
2. They receive an email confirmation in their inbox that they want to subscribe to our newsletter. They must click a button/link to be added.
3. Clicking the link adds them to the Debug Politics Community list and filed as signup_from_website for their involvement_type.

again, i'm new to MailChimp so I don't know what's doable, yet. Let us know if you discover anything
