Engineering Park #29

Open lightzephyr opened 6 years ago

lightzephyr commented 6 years ago

Title: Engineering Park

Description: An area where engineers can meet to discuss, explore, share and showcase ideas. These ideas could be related to the classical branches of engineering such as aeronautical, mechanical, electrical and industrial or to new branches and possibilities that nobody has even thought of yet.

Project Lead: Tristan Martindale, tristanmartindale@gmail.com

Project Team: None as of yet, but anyone who is interested in contributing is welcome to contact me.

Goal: The Engineering Park should become the "go to" place for engineers to explore the state-of-the-art as well as to enhance their knowledge, discover new ideas and get involved.

Ownership: The LAND will belong to those individuals and companies who purchase land within the district. It will be up to these people to either use the LAND entirely for their own purposes or to provide facilities which others can use. For example, a company may choose to purchase a plot of LAND and install in a unique showcase of their own products. Alternatively, another company may choose to setup conference facilities and show rooms and rent them to the public.

LAND Needed: I have no idea. However, to use a real world example: the Köln Messe convention centre in Köln, Germany has 284.000 square meters of exhibition space and a further 100.000 square meters of open space. Assuming that a 20 x 20 meter area is a reasonable average exhibition space for an individual or company, I would estimate an average of 4 LAND per individual space and 3840 LAND in total. However, this is completely arbitrary since normal physical space constraints only apply in Decentraland to a limited extent and I expect (hope) that the world in VR will be wonderfully different from real world space.

Startup Costs: Startup costs have not been estimated and a business case has not been prepared.

How will funds be raised: I intend to invest my own MANA to create a space which will implement some of the ideas presented here. I hope that others are interested in doing the same at that we can create a community of interest. If anyone is interested in taking this more seriously, then please contact me and let's have a chat.

How will contributors see a return value: Imagine being able to discover and explore the next generation of space vehicles currently in development. Imagine being able to visualize the architecture of a computer processor at human scale. Imagine being able to show the world your prototype before actually having to commit to manufacturing it. Imagine being able to get a glimpse of how the future might really look, not in 2D, but in VR.

Think of the time and expense involved in even just attending a typical trade show, never mind hosting a booth there or presenting a paper at the conference. In Decentraland, this trade show could be "always on", available wherever you are and whenever you want. Virtual conferences could be held without the usual constraints of time or space and where the presentation material is not a slide deck, but a VR tour of a facility, product or even abstract concept.

That's a great idea! For consistency and to allow contributors to asses projects equally, could you include at the beginning of your proposal a filled in "District Proposal Framework" Thanks so much for your contribution!

District Proposal Framework

Title: Name of Project Description: Discuss in a paragraph the details of your Proposal Project Lead: Name and Email Project Team :Name / Email / Roles of each committed team member (list no more than 5 members) Goal: What does this District want to accomplish (i.e. generate revenue for its owners, act as a public gathering place, just be for fun) Ownership: How will ownership of the district be distributed? LAND Needed: How Much LAND will be required to successfully launch this District Startup Costs: How much (in ETH) will be needed to fund building the District (pay for developers / designers / marketing) How will funds be raised: Explain how startup costs will be raised to complete and launch the District How will contributors see a return value: Explain why others would want to participate in this District Attachments / Designs / Budgets : Upload any supporting files.

Many District proposals may be too early on in the development process to answer all of these questions but the idea is to establish a common rubric for submitting a proposal, to get contributors to start thinking about how they intend to execute on their projects and to give potential supporters an idea of how far along in the development process each particular proposal is. This will help them make a well informed decision in choosing which project to participate in.

Hey, is this community active? I have a question about this district.

lightzephyr commented 6 years ago

Hi @fourcolors

There isn't really a community yet and you are the first person to contact me. That being said, more people committed mana to the district than just me, so I assume that at least a few others are interested in the idea.

What is your question? I will try to help.

Hey @lightzephyr I like this one. How about we make a channel for this in the rocket-chat?

lightzephyr commented 6 years ago

Sounds like a plan. I'll send a request to the administrators.

lightzephyr commented 6 years ago

The channel is called #district_engineering_park.

lightzephyr commented 6 years ago

This is a shout out to everybody who contributed to the Engineering Park district to please make contact, either via a PM to me directly, or via the District_Engineering_Park channel on Rocket.Chat. I am working on expanding the district proposal and I am looking forward to hearing from you and discussing your expectations regarding the district.

Here is another shout out to everybody who contributed to the Engineering Park district to please make contact, either via a PM to me directly, or via the engineering-park channel on the DCL Discord server. I will release the first version of the district proposal in the coming days and I am looking forward to hearing from you and discussing your expectations regarding the district.

lightzephyr commented 6 years ago

v2 of the district proposal has been accepted by DCL. Here it is: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Qt9ZOPx9MSd9bqYG-oFHrSIRik2ex3Cz

And here is the final, pretty, version: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1vQPAmvYd90pYMZBze4cMMOWINiT98m4D

It is my intention to open the vote tomorrow for a total of three weeks. That means from July 6 to July 26. We'll see if DCL will enable that.

lightzephyr commented 6 years ago

The vote for acceptance of the Engineering Park proposal is now open. Visit https://agora.decentraland.org/ to cast your vote. Be sure to vote using the same ETH address that you used to make your contribution.

lightzephyr commented 6 years ago

Please note that the vote for acceptance of the Engineering Park proposal will close tomorrow at 12:00 GMT. Visit https://agora.decentraland.org/ to cast your vote. Be sure to vote using the same ETH address that you used to make your contribution. If a contributor does not vote, then they will lose their right to use District LAND.

SuperAlan1 commented 2 years ago

Hello, I would like to participate in Engineering Park. There is a huge potential to make this District one of the most profitable on Decentraland

fourcolors commented 2 years ago

@lightzephyr I have some land next to engineering park, would be cool to do something together. Do you have a discord?

lightzephyr commented 2 years ago

Please make contact either via the Engineering Park channel on the DCL Discord server, or by emailing hello@engineeringpark.org.

lightzephyr commented 2 years ago

I am very pleased to announce the launch of the Engineering Park community. The new website at engineeringpark.org has information about the district's vision and mission as well as the community (including the leaders and original contributors). It also includes information for non-commercial tenants who are welcome to build on district land for free, and commercial tenants who have to pay rent. There is a district page describing the layout, listing the regulations and laying out policy. And last but not least, there are contact details describing how to get in touch if you would like to get involved. Read the blog to learn about the latest news and find out what's in the pipeline for the future. And, of course, come and checkout the new content in the district itself at coordinates 69,49.
