Open ethanhoroschak opened 7 years ago

ethanhoroschak commented 7 years ago

Allow Users to bet or gamble on certain activities like sports or events. Can create casinos for gambling with poker or slot machines. Make a weekly or monthly lottery where users buy a ticket for a set mana price.

Cool! Solidity again for this one... We can have part of the profits go to funding new Projects in decentraland. :+1: :100:

Can use Unity models for casinos and gambling systems.

This would have legal problems like it happened in Second Life. There should be some entity with legal rights for online casinos like it is normally on the internet.

Decentralization for sure makes it alot harder for any government entity to monitor gambling. In the case with second life, the prosecuting party had a specific target. With decentraland, whilst they could contact the devs and force them to regulate decentraland, people could always just fork it and run their own decentraland if they got enough nodes onboard.

There are a lot of legal issues surrounding online gambling, so this would be tricky. Unless you actively block players from countries where online gambling is mostly illegal -- like the US for example -- you could be at risk from prosecution in those countries. Neither user anonymity at the time of play, nor the use of cryptocurrencies, make you immune from this. I'm not sure the DCL team would want to assume that kind of risk, but maybe enterprising land owners in countries where online gambling is legal could try it.

Gambling can't be illegal in Decentraland!!!!

Without good honest gambling (something SL provided with low-rake poker where all websites have since failed). The only use-case which remains is dirty old men playing BDSM with each other.

SL isn't dead because of gambling, it's dead because of lack of gambling.
