I started this rewrite back in 2015 and I really ought to stop hanging onto it (many commits have old dates, but I've squashed fixes in)... so I'm opening this as a PR, because I feel like Ben Zanin (are you on GitHub)? is probably interested. Can you try it out, see what works for your cases, tell if I'm completely off base on anything?

I am indeed on Github! This pull looks great. twij looks like exactly the kind of tool I've been finding myself hacking together. On my earlier read-through I had a couple of spot comments, but nothing substantial; I'll make another pass over lunch and actually write 'em down this time.
