I like the concept of the canvas scrolling interface. This feature probably needs more 'fleshing out' to give a reason for 2 dimensional scrolling. Possibly geography? The further you scroll away the further the proximity of where the photos were taken?
Maybe look into Machine Learning to achieve the recommendation system.
