Research All good design begins with research and it is the data you gather that will establish requirements for your design, will inform your sketches and wireframes, and determine how well your prototype addresses user needs. Design research, like journalistic research, often involves both desk and field work . We want you 1 to do some original research and use your findings as the basis for your design decisions. Your research should include: • Academic studies: what does the literature say about the problem you are exploring; • Other documents: statistics or reports that help map the domain; • Primary data: interviews, focus groups or surveys of target users; • Observations: what is the use context. We do not need to read a complete literature review or transcripts of interviews. Rather, we want you to synthesise what your research has told you and quote studies, sources, observations to support your claims. Photos are a great way to show use context. Requirements Based on the evidence you have collected, what is the problem, and what does your design need to do to better understand that problem? Articulate what you aim to achieve and how. For example, based on your research you might decide that older people are reluctant to get news on mobile devices because the text is too small and there is too much irrelevant content. So your aim is to develop a news app for retirees to address these concerns. Some of the requirements might be larger font sizes, bigger buttons, the ability to select news by location and to make topicssuch as personal finance or gardening more prominent.

Chris' Notes: 1) Trustworthy" UI design (normally relevant for e-commerce but I think it applies to our app in terms of communicating trustworthiness / authority in our design. There are literally a billion articles on it. 2) Determining how much information is available publicly; assessing what could be granuralised and coded into JSON so it can be presented in a meaningful way

Research focus areas:

• Trustworthiness in design. Given our site is an "authority", how can we design to reflect this. • Exploring elements of CSCW in "Fact Checking" component; collaborative approach to problem solving. How can the app best facilitate this? Present idea currently sits in the "Different Time/Different Place" quadrant of the CSCW matrix. Through our prototyping we will determine whether there are advantages in pursuing elements for "real-time" remote interaction to facilitate the fact checking process. The current idea/approach to "Fact checking" has 3 individuals being asked a series of set (multiple choice) questions about an article (which they answer independently). Questions aim to determine the trustworthiness of an article; each answer is assigned a "score". Results are then averaged across the three to produce an article "rating". "Direct" collaboration between fact checkers has been minimised to avoid the pitfalls of "groupthink" and to protect the integrity/credibility of the result. It's questionable whether this approach is valid, or whether we would gain from a more open, collaborative approach to Fact Checking.
