At first, SMS Backup is a very useful app, thanks !!!
But I have the following problem with HTC Desire:
"number@unknown.person" appears after changing the contact name
(before that it worked correctly)
changing the contact name to the old value (and also de- and reinstalling
of SMS Backup) didn´t help.
Are there any logfiles or settings on the sd-card wich I could repair manually?
Thank you!

I'm seeing the same problem on my desire. Before on my Hero SMSes were backed
up with the contact name and not the telephone number. Now with my desire all
SMSes are being backed up with the number.
Is this a bug? Or must the people (name + number) be also present as contacts
in gmail?
All the best,
Nick

Same here, on my desire a bunch of numbers appear as "number@unknown.person"
whilst some others don't. Can't see a pattern :(

The same on my u8230 (v2.1-update1) - The problem occurs with Gmail contacts.
With Phone contacts app works better. But now instead of
"number@unknown.person" I have empty "From" or "To" field (issue41).

on verizon phones, disabled the backup assistant. This was conflicting with
the sms backup. Since contacts are synced with google already. I did this on
my Samsung Fascinate and I no longer get the "number@unknown.person" when sms
are backed up to gmail
