no library versioning? #13

Need to package this (deb, rpm etc.).

I have very little time at present to work on packaging but if you're keen I'm more than happy to go eyeball pull requests for deb packaging.

I'll open a separate ticket for a pkgconfig file, simpler start.

OK to add under autotools or just debian packaging with existing makefile (Some modifications required) ?

It's pretty self-contained, so simple tweaks to the makefile along with debian package related files would suffice.
