this fixes 2 issues I had related to compatibility with newer versions of packages and another issue I had with processing LMA data that had been exported from xlma (IDL). cherry-picking and further edits are welcomed.

Thanks for these updates. I've personally let lmatools go stale to focus on modernizing the whole architecture with xlma-python, but it's useful to bring things up to current with these small changes.

Other than my query about the hull volume fix, the others look good.

sorry that 10 second fix took me three months... anyway... I think this is good to merge now
