Read metadata #9

Just matching up additional metadata parsing between versions.

A long term idea, which I'll add to #6, is that we might want to include some truncated, simple data files of various flavors in the repository, and attach some testing infrastructure to make sure that future changes to the reader don't accidentally break anything.
