9 years ago By no means do I doubt the usefulness of this feature request. However, there
are two reasons why automatic (zero-administration) update will not be
implemented:
(1) sigplus users may (and are encouraged to) change stylesheet files to better
suit sigplus galleries to the main theme of their site/template. By doing so,
users are actually creating sigplus spin-off versions of their own. An
automatic update would most certainly overwrite these custom changes, which
would not quite match with the user intent. If, on the other hand, the
automatic installation process would skip stylesheet files, I could never make
sure necessary updates to *.css files (e.g. to improve overall robustness,
compatibility or user experience) take place with an update installation,
potentially resulting in broken functionality.
(2) Automatic updates require an update server. In other words, sigplus users
from all over the world would be contacting my server to check for newer
versions. Given the popularity of sigplus, this would put considerable strain
on my server. If the Joomla community were to offer a high-performance server
for hosting extension update manifests, I would surely seize the opportunity
but this is not currently an option with my hosting service.
