Project status #1111

What's the current status of deepstream? In 2020 @yasserf stated that the project was going into maintenance mode and that he will no longer be fixing bugs or answering questions. Since 2021 there are however several new releases by @jaime-ez with the latest one being even a major release (6.0.0, released 5 days ago). Does this mean that the project is actively being developed again, this time by jaime-ze?

I'm planning to start a completely new project early 2022 where deepstream might be a good fit, but at the moment the current status as well as the future of deepstream is a little unclear to me.

Hi, effectively the project is in maintenance mode, and I am the most active maintainer...contributions welcome!

Maintenance means that I'll try to fix issues that might arise and update dependencies (no timeline guaranteed)

No new features or changes. However if someone wishes to add something I'll be happy to review and discuss if it is a good fit.

The major release was due to a change in the nodejs version.

The future of deepstream depends on its user base, I plan to keep using it, it would be great if more projects do!

Best

Hello, I'm using deepstream for years now (since release 2) for at least 4 projects, one of them is deployed into 20 cutomer sites without any issue, I'm also going to start a new project next year and will use deepstream again. I made an attempt to look for another alternatives but didn't found a server with all features (presence, events, pub, sub, lists)...

Wow! You're confirming that the project is still in maintenance-only mode but nevertheless I did receive 2 useful answers within 15min. This usually doesn't even happen with a lot of actively developed projects!

Actually, when a project is not actively developed anymore my main concerns are especially regarding future compatibility issues as well as security issues that won't be fixed. But I'm getting the impression that this probably won't be a major issue with deepstream, given the maintenance intentions you're talking about.

I'll do some initial testing with deepstream next month and if everything goes well I will probably start using it for real ;-) Thanks @jaime-ez and @slachtar for the fast and to-the-point replies, it's greatly appreciated!

Glad to help.

However, there is one warning I must give. The website docs have not been updated recently due to CI issues and gatsby not working anymore. If you encounter some problems with the examples on the website that don't work, don't panic, raise an issue and I'll try to answer as soon as possible with the updated example.

I hope in march I'll have time to update the docs to a simpler website on github pages.

I'll close for now, feel free to ask further questions if you have doubts

Ok, that's good to know. Thanks again.
