With the addition of the new Rocket Mayhem gamemode, my desire to rocket main, ironically, dropped somewhat. Which is fine. It lets me branch out into maining other slow-bullet-speed weapons, whilst i still get to enjoy juicy rocket tag every once in a while.
So i tried out the Crossbow. (Again, but this time properly, and with violent intent)
It needs to be buffed. It doesn't have any huge obvious weakness, but it's got several subtle ones which add up to making it terrible:
first bullet knocks the target out of the way of second bullet.
it's, like, the only weapon that needs to be semi auto. It's goddamn impossible to control if it will fire a single bullet or two. (Granted, i could fix this for myself easily)
lower bullet speed means it's not nearly as viable at long range. Where Flintlock can still hit reasonably often, Crossbow is almost guaranteed to miss.
i suspect it has a smaller hitbox than Flintlock. Doesn't make any sense, but that seems to be the case. Can be easily tested by firing through tiny openings. Flint bullets are blocked, bolts get through.
it's an awkward precision but spam weapon. If you use it as a spam weapon, you're not going to be very precise, inherently as you cannot fully control where both shots will go. (I also suspect the accuracy drops under continuous firing, though i'd need to look at the formulas again)
if you use it as a precision weapon, firing one bullet at a time, you're going to have to deal with varying firerate (200ms -> 1500ms -> 200ms -> 1500ms -> ...) which is really awkward.
there does seem to be movement slowdown when firing it, which is just not an issue with Flintlock.
Which means Flintlock just completely overshadows it. Making Crossbow completely useless. I don't want Crossbow to be useless, though! Even if i won't use it myself in the future, i want to see Crossbow users as a threat, not as easy targets.
So here are the proposed changes, going bullet-by-bullet:
disable knockback for the bolts completely.
set up optional semi auto functionality for the weapon. (Enabled in settings perhaps?)
the bullet speed can remain as is, being a unique quirk of this weapon. It is a bow after all, not a gun.
all slow bullet speed hitboxes need to be the same size. Whether that means increasing the hitbox of Rocket and Crossbow, or decreasing the hitbox of Flintlock, is mostly a coinflip.
i'm not sure how to address the issues which arise from it being a pew-pew bow. Though perhaps at least it should have perfect accuracy between shots.
maybe also remove movement slowdown while firing it. It's a really awkward thing, especially for a sidearm, and it throws off aim. I'd much rather be slowed down by the reload.
