It would be neat if I could select a "[Open git URL]" and give it my project github link and it does kinda the same thing new project does where you can chose where to create it.

We've talked about a tighter integration with GitHub. Your suggestion is in line with this. Perhaps even a way to authenticate and get a list of projects.
