For the FY 2020-2021 budget, Irvine has appropriated $91.4 million of the general fund to the police department. At 45% of that budget, this is larger than any other portion of the general fund. Compare this to $40.8 million (20%) spent on community services—this includes all recreation, senior, fine arts, athletics, and children and family programs.
Around the country, we are witnessing shocking abuses of police power manifested as violence and murder inflicted primarily on Black, Latinx, and Indigenous people. While these high-profile cases are taking place in other cities, Irvine is not free from systemic racism within its criminal justice system. One only needs to listen to interactions Black people have had with IPD to know there is room for improvement. To truly rid ourselves of these problems, we must imagine and build new systems to keep the people who live and work in Irvine safe—systems that enable conflict de-escalation, substance abuse treatment, mental health, and housing services.
I demand that the City Council begin defunding the Irvine Police Department and reallocate those funds to programs proven to more effectively promote a safe and equitable community, such as affordable housing programs, subsidized childcare and housing, community-based mental health programs, and investment in programs for the homeless.

4 years ago I used the adopted budget for 2020-21 from the city. The total public safety budget is on page 219, this should get you there: https://online.flippingbook.com/view/5515/219/ and community service is page 183.
