Toronto: Subject: Toronto Demands A People's Budget To whom it may concern: My name is [INSERT NAME], and I am a resident of the [WARD NUMBER] Ward. I am emailing to demand the restructuring of the Toronto city budget in a way that prioritizes social services for communities and drastically minimizes spending on police. We are in the midst of widespread upheaval over the systemic violence of policing, embodied by the Toronto Police Service’s well-documented history of disproportionately enacting violence against Black communities (as shown in the 2018 report on racial profiling by the Ontario Human Rights Commission). In the memory of Albert Johnson (1979), Kenneth Allen (1991), Andrew Loku (2015), and Regis Korchinski-Paquet (2020) we will no longer accept empty gestures. We are demanding that our voices be heard now and that real change be made to the way this city allocates its resources. The Toronto Police Service’s approved $1.076 billion operating budget for 2020 is unacceptable and comes at the cost of affordable housing, support for essential city workers, and other transformative initiatives. These programs are needed now more than ever to alleviate the harms of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for Black and Brown communities. I ask that the mayor and city council members prove their respect and commitment to the people of this city and reallocate funds to directly benefit those in need. Subject: Durham Demands A People's Budget
“To whom it may concern:
My name is [INSERT NAME], and I am a resident of the [WARD NUMBER] Ward in [township/city/town]. I am emailing to demand the restructuring of the Durham Region 2020 budget in a way that prioritizes social services for communities and minimizes spending on police.
We are in the midst of widespread upheaval over the systemic violence of policing, embodied by data collected for the Ipperwash Inquiry, showing that Black Ontarians are 3.3 times more likely to appear in an SIU investigation than their representation in the general population would predict. Durham Regional Police is not exempt from this behavior, enacting violence against racialized communities. In the name of justice for Dafonte Miller, and Anthony McIntosh, we will no longer accept promises of "reform" or unconvincing apologies like that of retired Durham police officer Louis Waldman. We are demanding that our voices be heard now and that real change be made to the way this city allocates its resources.
The Durham Regional Police’s revised budget of $213.23 million operating budget for 2020 is unacceptable and comes at the cost of affordable housing, support for essential city workers, and other transformative initiatives. Your very council approved an "investment" of $1.5 million, in order to hire 20 additional frontline officers. This is not the preventative measures that are necessary, and are in fact needed now more than ever to alleviate the harms of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for Black and Brown communities. I ask that the Regional Chair and council members prove their respect and commitment to the people of Durham Region and reallocate funds to directly benefit those in need.
Thank you for your time, [YOUR NAME] [YOUR ADDRESS] [YOUR EMAIL] [YOUR PHONE NUMBER]”

@beastlyenby For Toronto, can you take a look at the template in issue #338 and comment if there's anything you'd like to add?
Following the recent horrific death of young Black and Indigenous woman Regis Korchinski-Paquet, I call upon our elected officials to ensure a transparent investigation into her death and start divesting from the systematically violent Toronto Police Service immediately. ** I would like to include something about the historic deadly force used against Black Canadians in Toronto- working in the names of Albert Johnson (1979), Kenneth Allen (1991), and Andrew Loku (2015) as well. Cheers
Please add specifically: Toronto, Ontario; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Ottawa, Ontario Please and thank you! <3
