Detailed message concerning the budgeting decisions at stake in your community:

To Whom It May Concern,

My name is [YOUR NAME] and I am a resident of San Mateo county writing to urge you to defund the San Mateo Police Department.

SMPD takes an enormous share of the city’s general fund, and that percentage has only risen over the last two decades, taking away desperately needed resources from essential city programs and services. The investment in policing has not made us safer – SMPD is a lethal threat to San Mateo's Black and Brown communities, while increased police spending shows no correlation to decreasing crime levels over the past 20 years. With San Mateo's current finances in dire jeopardy due to the COVID-19 financial crisis, it is clear that we must defund the police.

As San Mateo residents, we therefore demand that you take immediate action to ensure the following:

We are amplifying calls to defund the police, not reform them. I urge you to advocate for a meaningful reallocation of the city's expenditures: away from policing, and towards social programs and resources that support housing, jobs, education, health care, child care, and other critical community needs.

San Mateo cannot wait any longer for a budget that meets the needs of its residents. The only way to achieve this is to take immediate steps to Defund SMPD.

Thank you,

could use insertion of city budget numbers

ellahenn commented 4 years ago

I believe that the SMPD serves the city of San Mateo not the county, so maybe revise to say that the San Mateo Sheriff's Office rather than police department. According to the San Mateo County sheriff's office website (https://www.smcsheriff.com/administration/administrative-and-fiscal-services) they have a $254 million annual operating budget. Additionally, the county is predicting to have a budget deficit of approximately $65 million to $100 million due to the coronavirus pandemic. But rather than cutting the Sheriff's Office's budget they forecast that "Departments most impacted by these losses include those that provide direct safety-net services that we chiefly need during this COVID crisis: The Department of Housing, Human Services Agency and County Health and Public Safety, among others." (https://cmo.smcgov.org/press-release/may-29-2020-rough-waters-ahead-county-san-mateo-releases-2020-21-recommended-budget)

** the 2020-2021 recommended budget says that they expect the police to need $275 million which is a slightly larger sum than what the SMC sheriff says on their website. (https://cmo.smcgov.org/sites/cmo.smcgov.org/files/documents/files/FY%202020-21%20Recommended%20Budget.pdf)

@ellahenn i assumed this one was for smpd, not county sheriff, which is why i submitted a separate one for san mateo county! thanks for the numbers & we'll see what @cvpgallinat intended for this template to be for :)

cvpgallinat commented 4 years ago

hi all, can someone take over for me on this? I’ve had a family emergency and needed to travel. Would really appreciate help!

ellahenn commented 4 years ago

@ricee1213 ya i think i found it before you wrote up the sm county one, and it seemed unclear whether it was the county or the city, but i can try to edit a version for SM city, if that hasn't already been done :)
