Dear Onondaga County Legislature,
Hi, my name is [NAME] and I am a resident of [TOWN]. I am asking you to reallocate money away from Police Departments in Onondaga County, specifically the Syracuse Police Department.
According to a 2018 U.S. Census Bureau Report, the city of Syracuse was identified to have one of the highest poverty rates (31.8%) in the nation. Those living in poverty are disproportionately Black and Hispanic Americans.
In order to improve our community we must recognize that poverty, race, and crime are intersectional systemic issues. Research shows that a living wage, access to health services, treatment programs, educational opportunity, and stable housing are more effective and cost efficient at promoting community safety than policing and prisons.
Yet, despite our sky-high poverty rate, our County’s Budget continues to fund Police more than all of these effective social programs combined. This not only is an ineffective use of constituent’s tax dollars, but it is also counterintuitive in promoting public safety in our community. We must consider using our funding more responsibly to effectively meet these needs of our community.
Furthermore, I demand a meaningful reallocation of police department funds towards healthcare, affordable housing, and social programs which will ensure that we are moving towards building a safer and healthier community for all.
