Dear Gainesville Representatives,

My name is [YOUR NAME]. I am a Gainesville resident and I am writing to demand our local government step up to protect the lives of our Black community members by defunding the Gainesville Police Department. This is a pivotal moment in history and Gainesville has the opportunity to lead the way in the fight for racial justice.

It is time to adopt a People’s Budget that reallocates funds to meaningful community programs, safe housing, healthcare for all, educational opportunities, mental health programs, and positive environmental impact. We want to demilitarize our communities and remove law enforcement ties to schools and the University of Florida. Reforms are not enough. GPD must be defunded. We ask that you reject any proposed expansion to the police budget and demand the highest budget cuts per year, until the police budget is defunded.

Gainesville deserves better. We deserve better. Defund the GPD.

I urge you to do the right thing and embrace the responsibility of your role at this moment in history. Can I count on you to work to pass an alternative budget that puts a focus on protecting the lives of our Black community members in addition to promoting social service programs and the wellbeing of the community?
