The USB connector footprint is mostly surface mount, except for two thru-hole mechanical pins for the shield. While these pins do need to be soldered after reflow, the connector is extremely fragile until this is done.
One suggestion is to add some paste layer spots around the annular ring of these mechanical pins, so that they will get at least partially soldered during the reflow process. This should hold them in place until additional soldering can happen, or potentially even make additional soldering unnecessary.
