there are some possibilities:

  1. base on the 51 existing signal translations or
  2. pick only the 23 old-delta translations from the signal translations

in both cases, there will be strings that are not yet translated

A. let the translators start from scratch filling the new strings B. write a script that imports already translated string from old-delta

not sure, how complicated a script would be and if it's worth the effort. esp. when we choose option 1. , many languages will be new and won't have translators yet (not sure how easy it is to get new contributors on transifex. is it usual to ask people there?) all current translations just "happens" without any people being asked to do sth.

maybe we can go for 1.A and see how this goes. iirc transifex will suggest strings based on the existing ones, so if a language has a maintainer, it's probably done very quickly to transfer the strings from delta-old to delta-new

maybe there are also other options, feel free to add them :)

Hello, I would suggest the longest way: start from scratch. I can speak only for the Italian translation, but we can translate the sentences in some different ways. All of them would be correct, but MUST be coherent each other. Otherwise you'll have a correct translation looking at single sentences, but a mess when you use the app. Copying the existing strings will bring us to review each sentence anyway. We will have less to type but more to review. Delta Chat hasn't thousands of strings, so I vote for starting from scratch.

Every choice you will make is ok for me. We would have the same work more or less IMHO, but starting from scratch can bring us to improve the translation. Just keep online the existing translation for reference.

My two cents.

we can use a new repo in transifex for the new app and keep the old one as being "deprecated" (basically, this is also what we will do with the source code here on github)

Yes, this is the best thing to do, so we have a reference. Thanks
