According to this page https://pub.math.leidenuniv.nl/~smitbde/abc/index.php?set=1 a whole bunch of triples have already been computed including all those with fewer than 18 digits. However, many of the triples that I've found are in this range, is this because finding these triples is incidental and a necessary part of the search for the larger triples? Or are we re-proving all these too?

as the page is currently in beta phase, we are mostly recalculating old triples. But given a few weeks, we should be able to extend into uncharted territory ;-)
