UNP was a project much like ours to decompress MS-DOS executables, and - while abandoned for many years, actually still has a web presence with source code. The application itself ran under MS-DOS, so likely there would have to be some substantial work done to the code to get it running for multiple platforms etc., but it's an excellent place to start.
