Fantastic article – as someone who also uses UI, I'm well aware of the cloud infrastructure's potential pitfalls. However, I'd like to share a contrasting view based on my experience:
Back in 2012, my days were filled with managed IT services around San Francisco, where we were entrusted with setting up ASA 5505 and 5508-x devices for various companies. Remote access setups were routine for us – an economic choice over on-site visits.
Typing ‘ssh 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 outside…’ was part of our daily ritual, a necessary step in our quest for efficiency and profitability, despite the potential for cutting corners.
Then came the advent of UniFi, Meraki, and similar vendors, championing cloud network and simplifying remote access to a mere button click, embedding industry best practices into every setup.
The crux of my point is about trust and expertise. While in the past, a technician like Mikey might have fumbled due to personal issues and implemented the easiest solution that got the job done (0.0.0.0 with default creds), now, the streamlined, user-friendly configurations cloud network aim to mitigate human error, and make it hard to implement an insecure practice.
That’s not to say it’s perfect— it’s not for everyone- but if you look at the market share YOY, these solutions are becoming the norm.

There's a good reason why I don't want a cloud account to manage my networking infrastructure.
