This adds a few final tweaks on top of #104, to fix a few quirks on my system (zorder, having two non-blocking matplotlib windows outside pylab mode, and ignoring mouse wheel events).

@tomr-stargazer has done a nice job with this, and these last few tweaks make everything work on my system. Pending @astrofrog's approval, I think this is ready to merge
