Dendron snippets not working #2891

Describe the bug

Dendron is opens, lookup is functioning, snippets however are not. There is an error in the output however but I'm not knowledgeable enough to parse it.

To Reproduce

This occurs when I simply opening latest version of Dendron using VSCodium

Expected behavior

Snippets should work

Hey @Aodhagan, thank you for the report. It's hard to diagnose why snippets aren't working with the given information; could you give some addition context for this issue?

  1. Do other snippets work? Dendron's snippet feature isn't different from VSCode's built in snippets. We just provide some preset snippets in the form of .code-snippet files. If other snippets don't work as well, I suspect that some setting has change on your instance of VSCode that is preventing you from using them.
  2. If you revert Dendron back to an older version, do the snippets work?
  3. Have you recently changed to a new installation of VSCode(ium)? In this case, you would need to move them as well.
  4. If there is an error message when you try to use snippets, please attach a screenshot or copy paste the message.

Hi, sorry for delay in reply.

  1. Yes other snippets work in vscodium. I downloaded a snippets extension for markdown and they work no problem. Snippets defined in .code-snippet are as if they do not exist in markdown file with Dendron active.
  2. tried installing earlier versions of dendron to no avail. The same errors occurs in the output pane. Seemingly relevant errors to my untrained eye include [renderer1] [error] ENOENT: no such file or directory, open 'c:\Users\Mike\AppData\Roaming\VSCodium\User\globalStorage\dendron.dendron\segmentresidualcache.log': Error: ENOENT: no such file or directory, open 'c:\Users\Mike\AppData\Roaming\VSCodium\User\globalStorage\dendron.dendron\segmentresidualcache.log'
  3. No but in desperation I reinstalled VSCodium but to no avail. Opening the workspace folder and activating dendron results in the same errors.
  4. there is no error message when I try to activate a snippet. For example when I type to and then hit {tab} rather than inserting a checkbox it expands to another word on the page beginning with those letters e.g. tomorrow.

Also worth noting that Dendrons markdown preview does not seem to be working either. The preview pane opens and the text is there, markdown headings are rendering but checkboxes are not (see screenshot)

Can you disable the extension you installed and see if that lets you use snippets that Dendron define? There is a possibility that extensions that contribute similar features conflict with each other. In this case, there might be some conflict when the snippet scope is being resolved. In this case, you might have to play around with the settings of the other extension you've installed so that it doesn't conflict with Dendron's snippets

Uninstalled the aforementioned markdown extension that contained snippets. There is only extensions relating to Dendron and a grammar/spell checker installed now. General Dendron commands are working but snippets are still not working. Do you think the fact that the markdown preview does not render checkboxes (as seen in screen shot above) is somehow related to the snippets not working?

Perhaps a full uninstall and reinstall of everything is in order?

as a further update I moved my Dendron workspace from an encrypted USB key to my unencrypted primary OS harddrive and now snippets work and markdown checkboxes render correctly in preview. I wont close the issue yet as I will experiment with this further tomorrow.

Ah got it. I am not sure of this, but depending on how your encrypted USB is set up, VSCode might not be picking up the snippet file that is scoped to the vault (it is saves it under {your vault}/.vscode directory).

Unlike snippet extensions that I presume bundles their snippet contribution with the extension, Dendron creates a .code-snippets file when a workspace is initialized.

Do let us know what you find out in your experiment.
