Prevalent Not-Invented-Here syndrome on web interfaces #63

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Our mentors are continually running into issues and missing features on a scale
that we could
easily populate this tracker with veritably hundreds of bugs and feature
requests. I would
implore/request that more feature-filled interfaces be used for the web
interface, especially
those that are more in the "support open source" route by using open source
yourselves.

Web application projects/products like trak, mediawiki, bugzilla, gforge,
custom drupal modules,
etc etc would make for an exceedingly more productive interface than what is in
place. Please
take the criticism in good spirit, we are rather just trying to help and voice
an opinion regarding
what seems to be one of the more prevalent problems that everyone has to deal
with all in
response to what seems to be a massive NIH security/stability/customization
justification.
Rather classic reinvention reasons, no matter how you slice it.

In spite of facing retribution for making our opinions heard .. :-) .. the
existing interfaces and
access to information are painfully cumbersome to use, *excessively* immature
in their features,
and are a complete (lacking) reimplementation of interfaces that are
prevalently available. Even if
there are concerns with any of them, which is FUD claim in itself (heck, if
Sourceforge can
support millions of users and thousands or projects..), that same effort could
have been invested
to review/fix/improve those same codes instead of reimplementing basic features.

While I doubt my single voice will make any headway in swaying your opinions on
the matter, I
felt it necessary to be stated given the overall state of the "Home",
"Downloads", "Wiki", "Issues",
mentor/student app interfaces, and more.

Sincerely,
Sean

i am afraid, i have to totally agree completely. E.g. another thing i found
exceedingly annoying was the need to create another email to register as a
mentor, because it was not possible to cancel the registration as a student
on my main email.
Let's hope that for next year we can use more standard tools.

Sean, I am not sure why you'd assume that making your opinion heard would cause
retribution of any kind. That's certainly not the kind of community we're
building.
 Your concerns are noted.

Leslie,

That particular comment was half-in-jest and not intended with really much
purpose other than to alleviate
the impact of the (brutal) honest summation that followed. As stated, it's
hopefully criticism taken in good
spirit and I appreciate the feedback and receptiveness. We hope to see this
community be built up as well,
not to mention continued participation for year(s) to come. Thanks again for
the hard work and long hours
your team has been putting in.

Cheers!
Sean

This sort of 'bug' really belongs in a long, drawn out, annoying discussion on
the
mailing list.

Also, changing bug statuses. These issues are unlikely to be addressed in
non-geologic time.

I was just thinking that Google code would make an excellent submission review
system.
