Architectural Configuration of the D-TRO service #3

On behalf of DfT:

During a recent webinar some participants raised the question of whether DfT could access digital TRO records by accessing existing published services that some authorities have. In particular, the use of WFS (Web Feature Services) was mentioned.

The architectural configuration of a service to be able to access digital TRO records in a standardised format was a major point of review and consideration during an earlier Alpha project, undertaken by Informed Solutions, on behalf of DfT. The recommended approach of a supplier push-based central service was endorsed by DfT’s Architecture Change Control Board. This approach forms the basis of the current private Beta Minimum Viable Product (MVP), which is due to be launched imminently.

DfT is not averse to looking at alternative approaches that can complement the base centralised service, where this may prove beneficial to authorities. Any alternative would need to be subject to architectural and security reviews and would need to ensure that the digital TRO records accessed conform to the DfT’s emerging data standard. The DfT also needs to understand how prevalent this approach is among TRAs and our second D-TRO survey will help us to gather this information.

I fully endorse JHB's above response and would encourage TRAs and DSPs to let us know their thoughts on the use of WFS and also if they use it themselves. The new survey will be going live in the coming days and we'll cross-post it here.
