Siteimprove CMS integration for VAMC editors #10201

Open EWashb opened 2 years ago

EWashb commented 2 years ago

Background

VAMC editors currently use Siteimprove as a means to provide accessible content to Veterans and users of the VAMC product.

Integration with SiteImprove has been identified as a path forward through tasks associated with #4395. As we roll out notifications to a larger audience, we need to ensure that any processes to clear notification work in unison with SiteImprove rather than adding more work for the editors. As of Jan. 2023, only VAMC editors have access to SiteImprove, but there may be an option to open this up to other editors in the future.

The thought is that editors that have access to SiteImprove will have more tools under their belt to offer content that enhances the VA mission.

Hypothesis

As an editor in the CMS, I would like more tools within the CMS that allow me to take the guesswork out of writing in plain language and providing accessible content.

Path Forward

To do our best work, we need to look at both processes and note the similarities and differences. A UX review should be completed to determine the best opportunities for notifications. We would like for CMS notifications to improve or simplify the editor workflow, rather than cause additional fatigue.

Change management should also be consulted in this work.

Acceptance Criteria

what kind of data can we get with the API key and show it in Drupal or access it in someway? How might we use this data for a "report card"? What data do we have that can map to the report card? JHL used to do this. CMS will be the repository for all things to do with your content.

Right now people have to be proactive with SI or the CMS. How might we pull that up and use notifications in different ways to let people know about these things and link to a site health metric?

Currently this is blocked- so putting on hold for now.

@kmariepat-cityfriends @Dottisea FYI- SiteImprove Epic

As of July 2023, we will put this initiative on hold. I have coordinated with Blake Scates regarding integration and the costs and efforts associated with this work. VA currently has a roll out planned for AMP which is another accessibility scanning tool. Because of this, I believe we are trying too many solutions at once. AMP is currently being tested as a solution with our VHA DM partners and @laflannery. While AMP is undergoing testing and rollout planning, we should halt Siteimprove integration to ensure we are not duplicating effort. We can revisit once the AMP discovery is completed by both our team and our stakeholder parents at VHA DM.

Working with VHA DM to see if there's an opportunity to fund a smaller timeframe from now until March. This will allow us to get a prepublish token and pilot/test out an integration.

EWashb commented 11 months ago

Blake is checking with Siteimprove to see if we can get a 2 week free trial to test a pre-prod token to pilot if this is something we would even want to do. @ndouglas if they can get a preprod token for even a short period, can we set up a test env to play around in during that window?

cc: @BerniXiongA6 if VHA DM can get the free trial we need to look at possibly early Dec to prioritize setting up the test env and doing some additional technical and UX testing during this short period. I can provide more info if you need it

Quick update for CMS Team: Per Jane's Slack thread today, we should discuss when the 30-day window should start for testing Siteimprove. cc: @ndouglas @EWashb

We will need to balance this with other Q4 priorities. We can start the free trial of the token at any time. We just want to do proper testing BEFORE March 2024 and that testing will be limited to 30 days per the agreement between VHA DM and Siteimprove
