Background

The goal of facility map pages was to help visitors to each facility with wayfinding via information about parking lots and navigation details/context for buildings on large medical campuses. Initially these pages could include either/both static and downloadable pdfs.

In the KB article editors were instructed to link to facility map detail pages from "Campus and building maps” or "Parking" accordions within the “Prepare for your visit” section.

Problems to solve

Audit

Audit observations and examples - Campus map pages may have been nestled under Locations or Programs. These pages aren't included in the left navigation menu and are not discoverable unless links are available in an accordion within the "Prepare for your visit" section. - Example: [Robley Rex Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center](https://www.va.gov/louisville-health-care/locations/robley-rex-department-of-veterans-affairs-medical-center/campus-map) - Page naming conventions are inconsistent although the KB article instructed editors to use` Location name, map,` e.g., “University Drive campus map.” - Examples: - [Tampa VA Main Hospital Parking Map](https://www.va.gov/tampa-health-care/programs/tampa-va-main-hospital-parking-map/) - [Tampa VA Main Hospital Map](https://www.va.gov/tampa-health-care/programs/tampa-va-main-hospital-map/) - [Tampa VA Main Hospital Campus Map](https://www.va.gov/tampa-health-care/programs/tampa-va-main-hospital-campus-map/) - [Parking map](https://www.va.gov/tampa-health-care/programs/parking-map/) - Use of the recommended introduction content is inconsistent. (“Use this to navigate the facility or locate your care provider’s office. To print the map, download the file and print that so you have the highest quality image.”) - Some campus map pages also contain Driving directions and GPS information - Example: [Campus map](https://www.va.gov/st-louis-health-care/locations/john-j-cochran-veterans-hospital/campus-map/) - Some pages contain an embedded image content block with a link, others have just a link - Link placement varies (some are at the very bottom of the page, below driving directions, GPC coordinates and other content - Link language and icon - Many facilities need to provide more than one map. - Facility maps can be embedded images or interactive.

Initial audit conclusions

Veteran feedback provided via Medallia

Direct Veteran feedback - YTD 8/2023 - All I wanted was a map of the campus. The one you provide is unreadable. - I can never find what I am looking for on this website. Specifically this time I am looking for a map of the campus so I can find the building I am looking for. - I was trying to figure out which parking lot to use - This place is a maze. A better map need to be made easily available. - Need better maps of the building floors and rooms - Your "map" of the campus is low resolution and shows nothing of the services on the map itself. - Your map is so outdated that it doesn't have the building I am visiting - Not enough reference to the details for location of services, like where to find a wheelchair - There's no map on this campus map tab - I was looking for a map of clinic locations at the VA - I need building numbers to be included - I'm looking for a map showing the service areas for the VA Medical centers in my state
