From Matt:
Updates to our gender pattern
Please update Figma and design.va.gov to reflect the following changes:
The question we ask should changes to: "How would you describe your gender?"
The options we present in the radio button must be these and in this specific order:
Woman
Man
Transgender Woman
Transgender Man
Nonbinary
A gender identity not listed here
I prefer not to answer
Guidance MUST state that this question must be optional, not required and contain an option to opt-out (e.g. "I prefer not to answer")
Designers working on this can pretty much copy verbatim from the Race and ethnicity - When to use this pattern section and the How this pattern works section, both of which I recently updated.
One bullet point to add to both the Gender and Race and ethnicity patterns is:
Do not remove the user from the task at hand to communicate details about this data collection. Specific use descriptions, definitions, or other descriptive content must be brief and VA policy compliant with no need for a user to leave what they are doing.
Tasks
[ ] Write or update component documentation for design.va.gov
[ ] Coordinate with accessibility specialist to create or update accessibility guidance
[ ] Request documentation draft review
[ ] Once documentation is approved, publish to design.va.gov
Acceptance Criteria
[ ] Component documentation is published on design.va.gov
