Course number: Textbox. Numbers first, letters must be after numbers. e.g Econ is not an acceptable input, but 410A is.

For the course number field, I'd like a partial, non-editable autofill to happen:
User inputs "econ", selects economics from dropdown list.
Econ appears in a box to the left of an editable text field for course code that looks something like this [Econ|[input field]]
user enters no space string into input field: [Econ|[101]]
