There's no reason to eliminate /global/cfs/cdirs/desi/software
, but we should move away from using /global/project/projectdirs/desi/software
. On the other hand, I don't see a reason to hide the fact that software is actually stored in /global/common/software/desi
.

Question: should 19.12 (and any earlier releases) also be updated to use the latest version of desitree?

Good point. Yes, please update 19.9, 19.10, and 19.12 to use desitree 0.5.0, like you have done with master and datatran here. My understanding is the only difference is the project -> cfs swap, which will be required for them to continue to work in ~1 month.
For reference this is the only change to desitree.
I will update 19.x momentarily.
This PR updates paths to point to CFS where needed and remove any references to /global/project/projectdirs.
