Operation Bloodstone was a neoimperialist project to sanction and encourage privileged, disgruntled Easterners into spewing antisocialist propaganda and committing antisocialist terrorism in the East. Some of these privileged Easterners were outright Axis collaborators. The existence of this project seems to be unknown to even many of the most savvy anti‐imperialists, but in the Cold War’s context it is important all the same.
To quote Christopher Simpson, it was ‘one of the department’s most important covert projects from 1948 until approximately 1950, when it was superseded by similar programs under direct CIA sponsorship.’ The project demanded ‘special operations’ which involved ‘psychological warfare (black), clandestine warfare, subversion, sabotage and miscellaneous operations such as assassination, target capture and rescue of downed airmen.’ As always, the white bourgeoisie was to pretend that they had nothing at all to do with this operation.
