Develop specific advocacy and PR objectives for Dev Edmonton #37

We're getting a lot of feedback that Dev Edmonton needs to be more engaged with the broader Edmonton community.

This includes advocating for issues and values of importance to Edmonton's development community, as well as simply representing and raising the profile of developers in Edmonton.

The objective of this issue is to brainstorm specific initiatives Dev Edmonton should undertake to improve in this area, and identify individuals in the community with the skills and availability to take on this work.

These comments will be collected into the three sections below...

What Is Working Well?

Share what you think is working, so we continue to do it.

  1. The awesome community of developers we've built so far
  2. Slack

What Isn't Working?

Share what Dev Edmonton needs to do better or start doing. No solutions or actions, just issues. Add possible actions to the last section please.

  1. When discussion of the development community happens in media, it often seems to be with business or government agencies, and rarely actual developers or entrepreneurs.
  2. Dev Edmonton doesn't have a real face or voice, and this isn't articulated clearly anywhere.
  3. There's confusion about Dev Edmonton society's role and services.
  4. Many people simply don't know Dev Edmonton exists.
  5. We don't really know who makes up the Edmonton development community.
  6. We have no simple way to rally or organize the Edmonton development community (other than Slack)

What Should We Do?

Given what's working and what isn't, what specific actions could we take to improve?

  1. Identify some uncontroversial and "low hanging fruit" issues of concern to the developer community we can track and get to work on right away.
  2. Setup a mailing list we can use to reach this community (perhaps partner with other groups like Taproot, Startup Edmonton, etc.)
  3. Develop a directory of developers, projects, events, groups and companies in Edmonton with a way for us to contact them all quickly.
  4. Use the above directory to run a survey or other process to validate our list of developer issues and to track ones we've missed. Also try to get a sense of who developers in Edmonton really are.
  5. Put a face on local developers by highlighting all the great developers, projects, events, groups, and companies developing great technology and products here in Edmonton on the website.
  6. Start using the Dev Edmonton blog and social media accounts to tell the Dev Edmonton side of the story.
  7. Better share our mission, initiatives, and services on the website.
  8. Articulate the issues and values that developers in Edmonton care about on our website.
