I had actually forgotten about Mastodon, but I should post stuff there. Do people cross-post these days?

Yes definitely, I think about half of the people I follow cross-post to Twitter. Just did a bit of Googling too, seems that this a good tool to do so: https://crossposter.masto.donte.com.br/ a pretty nice OSS Ruby project on GitHub.
