You can use the site without signing up, your reading data will be stored in a session cookie.

Is there a way we could make it clearer that you don't need to sign up?

Do we need to also put some kind of disclaimer about the use of cookies on our site now?

Kind of, AFAIK the law isn't in effect in the UK yet and is almost entirely pointless to the point of having your browser set to accept cookies counting as consenting to them.
