Twitter and Facebook are quite different, as Twitter doesn't require a reciprocal relationship. Facebook tends to be more used for family/friend social groups, and is in no way a standard choice for conferences.
My concern here is if we build this into the code it will encourage what I think is an antipattern (moving of info for the conference behind a reg-wall).
Tbf, the recirpriocal relationship is required for "friends" - Pages on Facebook are wide-open.
On one hand, the content on a Facebook page is usually publicly accessible - although Facebook strongly encourage you to log in or sign up. So it wouldn't prevent people/public from being able to find and view the content. Also posts aren't limited to 140 characters so it could be useful for longer-style blog-like posts about the conference.
On the other hand, as you said, Bridget, Facebook tends to be used more for family/friend social groups and we learned this the hard way with the Facebook page we created for this year's Wellington conference. We did get a few likes on the page, but I suspect they were mostly the organisers. And there were very few posts contributed to the page from the organisers, conference attendees, or random Facebook users so overall the page didn't get a lot of traction.
We can revisit this in the future if there is high demand for it, but it's probably better to have way more awesome social sharing social graph stuff and more share buttons on the event pages themselves.
Any thoughts about reviewing this in 2020/2021? FB has evolved since 2017 (not saying for good or for bad, just that it has evolved), and I'd be interested in talking about LinkedIn in this feature as well.
I'm re-opening this as it might be more germane to have additional social links (linkedin, etc) especially as we start adding virtual events (youtube, twitch, etc might be helpful too)
sir,may i work with this issue, can you assign to me
Currently, there's a button that allows an event to be linked to a twitter account:
Which is declared in code as:
It would be awesome to have a similar button that links to an event's Facebook page.
