chore: Backport #509 to all major versions since 0.8 #510

This PR likely looks confusing; scroll to the bottom (and note the base branch).

This branch ensures these versions remain in the git tree despite no main history.

This includes the current version because breaking changes since then means the next version will be 0.16.0, not 0.15.1.
