Find a new name for ActorScript #453

Closed rossberg closed 5 years ago

rossberg commented 5 years ago

"ActorScript" is already taken, and specifically, claimed by Carl Hewitt, who is one of the inventors of the actor model and a difficult personality, to say the least. It seems preferable to stay clear of his wrath.

Suggestions?

Far too many, if I think of the many walks in Zurich…

Actor Scripting Language, a.k.a. Aslan

matthewhammer commented 5 years ago

I also like "Aslan" a lot, as well as its "full expansion" to "Actor Scripting Language".

It also has the benefit that, like Wasm, Aslan "is a contradiction, not an acronym." (The contradiction here is that Aslan is not actually a scripting language, but rather is compiled to Wasm, which isn't really an assembly language, or for the web).

paulyoung commented 5 years ago

I always thought that "Beacon" was a great name but it was taken by the ecosystem fund.

I'm not sure if that still exists so maybe it's up for grabs.

paulyoung commented 5 years ago

How about “Agency”?

crusso commented 5 years ago

Aslan is a bit, err, Christian, and if you watched Silicon Valley, that's a no-no in the valley. cue (as in actor's cue and a pun on queue) script transcript slang (service language) dal dasl (rhymes with dazzle) dilan (Gabor will protest that we can't GC Dylan) cast barney (my dog) subscript (Geddit?) puck

Winden

rossberg commented 5 years ago

@paulyoung, not sure I'm getting that?

paulyoung commented 5 years ago

@rossberg it’s where the German science fiction series Dark is set 🙂 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_(TV_series)

Actorscrypt

rossberg commented 5 years ago

That's pretty cute! Though it might run counter to our PR strategy of not getting associated with the "crypto" scene too much...

Can ask Dom next week.

crusso commented 5 years ago

FWIW Christoph pointed out that it also parses as Actors Crypt (where actors go to die). Not sure a change in letter is enough to circumvent a trademark...

A couple of scriptless ideas:

Persia (persistent actors, logo could be a magic carpet) Steady (as the slang word, hint at persistence and app lifetimes)

matthewhammer commented 5 years ago

Q: What language do you use? A: "I rock Steady"

let's call this language exactly what it is: "rock steady", baby

[The] Provisional [Language [of DFINITY]].

Q: "Wow! How did you write that new version of WhatsApp so quickly and cleanly?!" A: "Oh, it was easy. It's just Provisional."

Leo

There's already the online dictionary called "LEO (Link Everything Online)", and as a dictionary, that does have to do with (human) languages. But, I don't think we'd be confused with that. There doesn't seem to be prior PLs called Leo that come up in a quick google search for me.

“Destiny”

ggreif commented 5 years ago

"Acute", "AcuteScript" (@rossberg points out it is already taken: https://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~pes20/acute/)

"Vocal", "VocalScript"

ggreif commented 5 years ago

"Prononce", hinting at programming with (messages that are threaded via) nonces. Possibly even "Anonce" or "Enonce", but surely not "Denonce" :-)

ggreif commented 5 years ago

"Wit"

Phalanx

nomeata commented 5 years ago

Nice to see you all are having fun, but the name isn’t decided here, but somewhere by Dom…

paulyoung commented 5 years ago

Should we close this issue then?

nomeata commented 5 years ago

Consider it a place to vent ideas :-)

paulyoung commented 5 years ago

OK :)

paulyoung commented 5 years ago

In case that last one is lost on anyone:

acta [ ak-tuh ] plural noun (often initial capital letter)

  1. official records, as of acts, deeds, proceedings, transactions, or the like.

Astound

ggreif commented 5 years ago

There is a new definitive name now: Motoko
