OPEN DATA: Fisheries Dependent data for Sea Scallop in the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence (NEW)

Today @JenniMcD and I had a meeting with Andrew and Monique to discuss the feasibility of this record. The initial thought was that this should be easy to churn out.

The record will consist of the corrected landings data from Stats and the corresponding indecies of fishing effort. Each row in the data should be the computed annual effort for a given region/SFA. In years where the breakdown by SFA is not available, an aggregated region can be used instead, e.g., 4T.

Metadata should make sure to reference the related CSAS publication and should have a brief overview of the steps involved for the production of indices.

The script which produce the data set is : 02.5_science_data_inventory.R stored in the GC/Code sea_scallop_lrp R project.

The following dataset also stored in the project in the input_file folder (still need the approval of Andrew and Monique):

• The values in the data set aren't yet rounded (if we round it the result of an analysis that want to reproduce one of our study will probably be different).
• All the NAs are in (so it's not good looking).
• Probably some variables have to be selected.
• Variable names aren't in a format to publish it, do you want to upper case something, add space between word, or change the name of some?

Feel free to clone this repo (it is public) and you can work directly in it. A couple of things:

• I added a data dictionary which needs some descriptions added
• one of the requirements for open data is for the headers to be bilingual. I started making the change in the dataset, but probably best if you do it / verify the ones that I did. They will need to be updated in the data dictionary as well.

We have to make a decision about the translation of the variable names: in the document EN vs FR, towed.hours is translated to heures.draguees, but it is not exactly that...

dredge.hours = heures.draguees, trawled.hours = heures.chalutees towed.hours = heures.remorquees which includes heures.chalutees and heures.remorquees

Just a note for myself - definition in the dictionary are what they represent in general but they are not exactly represent the methodology to elaborate them

Meeting with Andrew (2023-10-10 11h) / Monique agreed (2023-10-17)

• suggests that we add the column "gear" (and it is modality equals to "dredge" so with could let the variable "towed.hours" for English and "heures.remorquées" en français;
• suggests to round to 3 digits.
• suggests to removed "trips" variables, if the file is just for LRP
• explains how to define better boats hat variable, (not before 1976), see ResDoc.
• agrees to let the NAs there.

I will do it after I meet Monique, to have her agreement on that too.

Hi, I just updated the dataset (and dictionary) with the new data set used in the analysis done by Andrew. If it has a problem, do not hesitate. (New decisions have been made in the light of the CSAS.)

On going issues with this file

• Dataset has been updated yet again, column headers are not the same, so data dictionary will also need to be updated.
• Will need to double check on geojson to see if any updates are required there.
• Metadata may need to be updated. Andrew mentioned yesterday that it was mentioned in the CSAS report that the 2023 data was preliminary, and he felt that this should be reflected somewhere. I advised him that I was leaving this up to him or Monique to do as I did not want to write something incorrectly in the metadata.
