Establish consistent formatting of slateratom code #18

This PR tries to establish a more consistent slateratom codebase. The draft status refers to the fact that the pending PR's (currently #12 and #14) should be merged first in order to avoid a ton of conflicts. I will then rebase on main at a given time.
