[OT] best way to deal with .doc? #1

I also have the problem of downloading/formatting/grading a lot of student submissions from Blackboard. Just come across this interesting project. I glanced the code and it seems only to format source codes. Any idea how to convert .doc, .docx from MS word?

If you work in Windows there's comtypes (see here for an example usage).

But sadly .doc(x) to .pdf solutions are all very OS-dependent, and since I work on a Mac, where no good solutions exist, I didn't think it was worth including (if you'd like to add the feature for Windows here you're certainly welcome to, though I'd ask you try to keep the existing functionality on other machines). I ask students to submit in PDF format for this reason.

I work on MAC or Linux, so MS Word is always a problem. I tried converting using CLI of OpenOffice but it's not always satisfactory, e.g. missing/ incomplete images. I also ask students to submit PDF, but there will always be a dozen submissions in .doc(x).
