Basic style cleanup #16

Still WIP, but good to have a PR with the current state.

Was going to have #14 close on merging this, as it was meant to be a huge overhaul, but in its current state it won't do everything I wanted. Making multiple smaller PRs seems to be the best way forward, because I'm tired of rebasing this long-lived branch all the time.

Rebased to resolve conflicts. Should still close the gaps in my contribution graph in late November 2017.

At some point I'll hop on the computer I started this branch on almost a year ago and grab the partially complete eslint config I was working on, then finish that up in a new PR.
