We could also consider to setup an automated publishing to Zenodo on each release? https://zenodo.org/

[x] create zenodo account for dhtech (?)
[x] link to github and enable zenodo deposit
[x] create initial deposit
[x] add DOI badge to readme
[ ] potentially create .zenodo.json file in repo for common metadata for future releases

related but possibly not the same — add a CITATION.cff file; can create an initial file from the DOI once it exists
