Mostly posting this up so no-one ends up duplicating the work; it's 95% mechanical, but lazy Text -> strict Text is an annoyingly pervasive shift.

I just freshened this, but:

this isn't actually building against dhall-haskell HEAD, but rather HEAD plus dhall-lang/dhall-haskell#464
half the tests are failing because of dhall-lang/dhall-haskell#462

OK, dhall 1.15 is out. I haven't bumped the Nix stuff but I think that's the only missing part here.

I can push the Nix stuff onto this. Hopefully cut a new release later. I think I'm gonna go with your defaults stuff as well. You've argued good points, and we can always change it if it turns out we got it wrong.
