App Forceable Crashes in Airplane Mode

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.Put phone in airplane mode
2.Try to launch the app and go into a content area
3.Watch it crash with a dialog box

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The app shouldn't crash with a dialog.  It should either notify the user 
that it doesn't work in airplane mode or even better, cache the news 
articles so it will work offline.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Nexus One with Android 2.1 update 1
