Most Active Conversations panel from Explore is gone

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Go back in time to February 2009
2. Look at jaiku.com/explore and note that there's a little panel
indicating the most active conversations/threads on the site
3. Travel back to the present day (taking care not to step on any
butterflies on the way back) and visit any instance of JaikuEngine. Notice
that there isn't a little panel indicating the most active
conversations/threads on the site

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
There should be a panel linking to the most active conversations on the
site. I don't know what the algorithm was on the old site but it worked
pretty well. Joe Gregorio has written up a technique for implementing this
kind of decay-based ranking on AppEngine:
