Change perspective from interview / job only to broader context. For example:
For the case of To friend: "I work harder than you."
, there are multiple interpretations, none of which are good.
Examples of hard work that is stupid: using the wrong tool for the job.
For example, manually adding numbers instead of using a spreadsheet or programming.
Somewhat related to the Dunning-Kruger effect in that someone can perceive their work as being worthwhile if they are not an expert.
Some feedback from Patrick:
I think you need to expand the exposition a little bit. Something like "everybody calls themselves a hard worker. Everybody wants everybody knowing that they are a hard worker. Everybody is petrified of being exposed as a medium-worker or a soft-worker. Are we all hard workers? Is anybody a hard worker? What does it even mean?"
and
"calling yourself a hard worker is the same thing as claiming you're an above average driver -- it's a vapid and unverifiable claim that is impossible to self-evaluate"
then jump into the 6-7 bullet points
