There is a collection of papers in the 2000s that have focussed on understanding the tracer variance budgets in the ocean, basically understanding what processes create tracer variance (mesoscale stirring vs turbulent stirring).
Ferrari and Polzin 2005 is a good starting point, which is motivated by an older paper Garrett 2001. Follow up on this was done in Smith and Ferrari 2009, which explored the details of the stirring more, and an interesting paper by Garabato et al 2016, which connected these budgets to the overturning circulation in the ACC.
It will be interesting to see how this body of literature relates to this work, and if some insights can be derived for Lily's work using oxygen.
